World's fattest man weds friend's widow

The Form Six students have been studying the topic of obesity lately. Here's the latest news about Manuel Uribe, the world's fattest man in 2007. He has just got married - congratulations Manuel!

Mexican Manuel Uribe, the world's fattest man in the 2007 Guinness Book of Records, married his friend's widow in a televised ceremony the US Discovery Channel dubbed My Big Fat Mexican Wedding.
Despite shedding 230 kilograms from 590 kilograms early on this year, Uribe, 43, had to be carried by a crane on his bed, where he has been confined for years, to the makeshift altar at a venue 30 minutes from his home.
The ceremony was televised by Discovery as part of a special, exclusive program titled after the 2002 US movie My Big Fat Greek Wedding , with other reporters from Japan , Germany and Argentina in tow.
Uribe has been suffering from morbid obesity since 1992. He was gripped by suicidal thoughts until February of this year when he undertook a drastic diet.
He and his wife, Claudia Solis, first met four years ago at the deathbed of a friend of his who weighed 250 kilograms.
The wedding reception had a "low-calorie banquet" with meat, cream of mushroom and buttered vegetables.

He is very healthy and already has quite a lot of hair. Matthew was born on Saturday 13th September at 7.50pm. Mrs Pearce is in Australia at the moment to help Kerry look after Matthew. She will be coming back to school in November.

Welcome back!

To all the students who have returned to our school, and to all the new ones, here is a big 'welcome' to you! I hope you had a good break and that you have started this year with optimism, especially when it come to learning English.

On this blog you will find lots of links to websites that can assist you with improving your English skills. Older students should find the 'Breaking News English' particularly useful.

And don't forget, I am here to help too! By clicking on the 'Ask Bob' link you can ask any questions you like about something to do with English - whether it's a grammar question, the meaning of a word or simply a request for help with pronunciation. Just ask!

I hope you all have a good year and look forward to working with you. Good luck!

The Olympic Dream is Dead!

At least, that's what the students in Form 6 had to debate last Friday. Both teams, the affirmative team of Carmen, Dicky, Wilson and Alice from 6A and their opponents from 6B - Charson, KK, Wilson and Rainbow, performed very well and gave some convincing arguments for their sides.
In the end, the judges, Ms Wong and Mrs Pearce, found it hard to separate the two sides but there can only be one winner and it was... 6B! Congratulations to you and to all of the participants!
The members of the winning team all received Olympic mascots ('fu wa') whilst the losers were presented with Olympic key-rings. A special award for the best overall speaker was won by Carmen.

Tragedy in China - please help!

As we all know, the Sichuan province of China has suffered a major earthquake - the largest in 30 years. Thousands of people have died or been injured and many more are still missing. Whole towns have been destroyed with schools, hospitals, factories and homes collapsing. Roads have been severely damaged and there have been many landslides, making it impossible for rescue teams to reach the worst-affected areas. As time goes on, the situation is becoming more desperate for those trapped beneath the ruins. Many of our students come from the Mainland or have relatives there. We can only try to understand the great sorrow that many families are feeling.

Our school has launched a fund-raising appeal to collect money on behalf of the victims of the earthquake. Please give it your support and donate as much as you can afford. Every little bit helps!
